Brow Lamination, Henna Brows or Tinting: Which Gives the Best Results?

Brow lamination, henna or a classic tint? How each brow treatment works, how long it lasts, what it costs and which suits your brows best in Cape Town.

If you fill in your brows every morning, you've probably wondered whether there's an easier way. There is — but with brow lamination, henna brows and brow tinting all on the menu, it's hard to know which one will actually give you the brows you want.

Each treatment does something different. Lamination changes the shape and direction of your brow hairs. Henna colours hair and skin to fill gaps. A tint colours only the hairs for soft definition. This guide explains each, so you can choose with confidence.

First: great brows start with shape

Whatever you choose, the foundation is a good shape. We tidy your brows by threading, wax or blade (R50), following your natural arch and face shape. Colour and lamination then build on that shape.

What is a brow tint?

A brow tint is a semi-permanent dye applied to your brow hairs only. It darkens light, fine or grey hairs so your brows look fuller and more defined — especially at the tails, which often fade.

The look: soft, natural definition.

Lasts: roughly 3–4 weeks on the hairs, depending on your skin and how often you cleanse the area.

Best for: fair or fine brows, grey hairs, anyone who wants a subtle "brows done" look.

What are henna brows?

Henna brows use a plant-based henna dye that tints the hairs and lightly stains the skin underneath. The skin stain creates a soft shadow that fills sparse patches and makes brows look fuller and more even — a bit like a light brow powder.

The look: fuller, more defined, like lightly filled-in brows.

Lasts: the skin stain usually fades within about 1–2 weeks (sooner on oily skin), while the hair tint lasts longer.

Best for: sparse or patchy brows, over-plucked brows, people who fill in their brows every day.

What is brow lamination?

Brow lamination is a treatment that relaxes and re-sets your brow hairs so they sit upward and in the direction we brush them. The result is fluffy, full-looking, brushed-up brows that stay in place — no brow gel needed.

Lamination doesn't add colour on its own, which is why many clients choose Brow Lamination & Tint for shape and definition in one appointment.

The look: full, fluffy, feathery, "brushed-up".

Lasts: usually around 4–6 weeks.

Best for: unruly, curly or downward-growing hairs; gaps you want to cover; anyone who wants a fuller, modern brow.

Which one should you choose?

Choose a brow tint if…

  • Your brow hairs are light, fine or greying
  • You like a natural, soft look
  • You want a quick, affordable refresh

Choose henna brows if…

  • Your brows are sparse, patchy or over-plucked
  • You fill in your brows every day and want a break
  • You'd like a fuller, more defined look without brow make-up

Choose brow lamination if…

  • Your brow hairs grow downward, curl or won't stay in place
  • You love the fluffy, brushed-up brow trend
  • You want brows that look fuller without adding colour to the skin

What happens at your brow appointment

  1. Consultation. We look at your brows, face shape and what you'd like to change.
  2. Patch-test questions. We'll ask about any allergies or past reactions to tints or dyes.
  3. Shaping. Threading, wax or blade to clean up the shape.
  4. Treatment. Tint, henna or lamination, timed carefully for your hair and skin.
  5. Finishing. Brows are brushed into place and you get aftercare tips.

Aftercare for longer-lasting results

  • Keep your brows dry for 24 hours
  • Avoid steam, saunas and heavy sweating for 24 hours
  • Skip brow make-up and oil-based products on the day
  • Avoid exfoliants and retinol on the brow area
  • For lamination: brush your brows up every morning
  • Rebook shaping every 3–4 weeks to keep the line clean

Oil-based cleansers and heavy exfoliating will fade tint and henna faster, so be gentle around your brows.

Common brow mistakes to avoid

Even the best brow treatment can be undone at home. These are the habits we see most often:

Over-tweezing between appointments

It's tempting to pluck "just one more" hair. But brows grow in cycles, and over-plucking can leave gaps that take months to fill. If a stray hair bothers you, remove only hairs clearly below the shape we've created — or leave them for your next appointment.

Choosing a shade that's too dark

Very dark brows can look harsh, especially against lighter hair or skin. We usually match your brows to your natural hair colour, or go one shade deeper for definition. You can always go darker next time; it's harder to go back.

Scrubbing your brows

Face scrubs, cleansing brushes and acids like glycolic or retinol fade tint and henna faster. Cleanse gently around your brows, especially in the first few days.

Skipping the shape

Colour and lamination look best on a clean, well-mapped shape. A quick threading or wax (R50) before your tint or lamination makes a noticeable difference to the finished look.

Growing out over-plucked or sparse brows

If your brows have been over-plucked in the past, the good news is that most hair grows back with patience. A few tips:

  • Put the tweezers down for at least 8–12 weeks and let everything grow.
  • Use henna or a tint during the grow-out phase so new, fine hairs look fuller and the gaps look less obvious.
  • Try lamination once there's some length. It can brush hairs over sparse spots and make brows look fuller straight away.
  • Book regular shaping so we can guide the shape as it grows, removing only what's clearly outside your ideal line.

Many clients combine a brow appointment with a lash lift for a fully "done" look that needs almost no make-up.

Frequently asked questions

Does brow lamination damage your brows?
When it's done correctly and not repeated too often, lamination is safe for healthy brows. We time the products carefully and recommend keeping brows conditioned afterwards.
Henna or tint — which lasts longer?
On the hairs, results are similar. Henna's advantage is the skin stain, which fills sparse areas but fades within about 1–2 weeks.
Can I have lamination and henna together?
We'll advise you at your consultation. Lamination & Tint is our usual combination for shape plus colour.
How much is brow threading in Lansdowne?
Threading, wax or blade shaping is R50 at Marvelous.

The bottom line

For soft definition, choose a tint. For fuller brows that fill gaps, choose henna. For fluffy, brushed-up brows that stay put, choose lamination — ideally with a tint.
